As we blast across an arm of Tampa bay in a brand-new Donzi 43 ZR, the green and red channel markers whip by at warp speed . Does anybody need to go this fast? Some do, including Miami Vice Squad Detectives Sony Crockett and Rico Tubbs. Fictional characters, to be sure, but very real presences to a generation of TV addicts.

For the moment, Donzi's Gene Weeks, champion racer Mike Flanigan and I are living out our own private fantasies of white slacks, no socks and alligators as pets, because this boat, or just one like it, will soon be at a Cineplex near you as the star attraction in Michael Mann's big screen production of his original "Miami Vice" series.

But don't expect to see Don Johnson or Philip Michael Thomas or hear the original music. The film version is all-new, with stars Colin Farrell and Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx. The boat is new, too. Originally, it was a Chris Craft Scorpion, and then for the next few years, a Wellcraft Scarab. Today, it's a Donzi . The Legendary Don Aronow, who started the company, must be smiling .

There are no druggies on our tail today, no helicopters spewing atomic weapons fire, just a few alarmed pelicans. But, we're having the time of our lives carving up the pellucid water. This is a traffic boat, light and agile. And fast. Did I mention fast? My coif's lying straight back as the speedo nudges toward 100mph.

A quick lean to the left. Straighten her out and bank to the right. No chine walking, just surefooted performance. "The hull is derived from our 38 competition boat," Weeks says as we back off to a mere 80mph. "Mulitple world champions." Flanigan, in fact won the 2004 APBA/UIM Super Vee World Championship in a 38 ZR named Lightning Strikes. The builder was so happy with the 38, it quickly rolled out a 35, and now the 43. In four years, Donzi has racked up nine APBA titles.
