One tough boat!

Ron Radon, Sr. built this 30 x 10 Custom Commercial Fisherman in Santa Barbara, California from the original thirty-foot mold. Radons such as these were designed to provide performance and safety in the roughest weather across the channel. Even today, the heavier built Radons are desirable for their seaworthiness and ability to surf downhill. Such a hardcore design is excellent for both sport and commercial applications along the West Coast.

SPIRIT I carries a USCG Certificate of Documentation with fishery operational endorsement. The boat is suitable for a variety of commercial and sports applications, including diving, fishing, and surfing. She also is quite capable as a six-pak charter boat. Whatever you aspire to do, SPIRIT I is one tough boat. She will, as we like to say, “take you through - - - -, and surely bring you home with some change to spare!”

Accommodations: Two cabin areas are provided, including a forward cuddy cabin and followed by a semi-enclosed pilothouse. The cuddy cabin accommodates three overnight passengers in separate single berths: port, starboard, and forward (above galley). The lower berths are equipped with mattresses. The upper berth has a reclining outer edge that can be flipped up to hold stored items and hide the bunk while underway. Other cuddy cabin features include two forward opening ports, two side windows, forward stowage shelf, two large under-berth dry stowage compartments, 12-volt light fixtures, 110-volt outlets, fabric headliner, mirror, and lockable companionway door leading to pilothouse. The semi-enclosed pilothouse is open-air aft with free access to working cockpit or fully enclosed with aft canvas curtain. Other pilothouse features include four windows, full instrumentation helm, captain’s swivel pedestal seat, footrest, first mate’s swivel pedestal seat, cup holders, and 12-volt light fixture. Over 6’ headroom is provided.

Galley Equipment: There is room to mount portable stove between the two bunks as shown in photos.

Electronic and Navigational Gear: The helm is equipped with stainless steel steering wheel, Quicksilver forward/reverse throttle set, trim tab control, two MerCruiser engine system monitors, twin-engine dash mounted gauges, and dash mounted electronics. Gauges at helm include two oil, two temperature, two tachometers, two voltmeters, two hour meters, and synchronizer. Electronic and navigational gear includes Furuno 841 Mark 2 16-mile radar with closed array, Furuno GP-7000F color GPS/plotter/sounder/fishfinder (laptop compatible), C-MAP 18MAY2008 US West Coast and Hawaii map chip, Garmin 198C color sounder, ComNav 1001 autopilot, ICOM IC-M602 waterproof VHF marine radio, ICOM IC-M302 VHF marine radio, Satellite 406 MHz EPIRB, 4” liquid magnesium Ritchie Powerdamp compass, and USCG standard running lights.

Electrical/Gas/Plumbing: The boat is equipped with both 12-volt and 110-volt electrical systems. Electrical features include four GP 27 marine batteries, acid proof battery boxes, Portawattz 300 inverter, two vapor-proof cut-off switches, interior cabin accessory/fuse panel, and color coded/copper stranded/plastic sheathed wiring.

Water systems include Rule automatic bilge pump and livewell fill pumps.

Hull and Deck Gear: The hull design is modified vee with hard chine, suitable for West Coast sea conditions, and enables the boat to stay on a plane and maintain a high speed in both forward sea and following sea conditions. This is the notable design of choice among commercial fisherman from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. Construction materials includes hand-laid fiberglass over moulded fiberglass and marine plywood framing, fiberglass stringers, wood and fiberglass bulkheads, hand-laid fiberglass transom (two outdrives bolted through), hand-laid fiberglass over marine plywood decking, and non-skid deck surfacing. The hull is equipped with bronze thru hulls with ball valves, two transducers, and outdrive mounted zincs. The house includes a forward cuddy cabin and California-style semi-enclosed pilothouse with forward slanting windows.

The deck layout includes deck at bow, narrow walk around, large working cockpit, and raised aft deck over engine compartment. Hull and deck gear includes stainless steel bow eye, two foredeck teak handrails, three cabin top teak handrails, radar mast, wash down decks, raised gunwales around cockpit, and two aft cockpit scuppers. Anchor gear includes American hydraulic anchor winch, commercial chain spooler, 33-lb. Bruce anchor, bow roller with anchor bracket, chain, and rode. Safety gear includes two survival suits, two life jackets, two fire extinguishers, docking line, and fenders. Fishing and sports gear include two large under-deck livewells, two davits, Hydro-slave hydraulic pinch puller, and stainless steel diver’s handrail mounted at the transom. The livewells are plumbed to fill and empty as needed with hot water from engine exhaust for hot tub use or cold water from ocean for use livewell use. Hookah dive air system (compressor and motor) shown in photos has been removed from the boat. It is available as part of the equipment list sold with this boat, and it can be easily re-installed. In September 2005, the hull and decks were completely refurbished with all new gelcoat from stem to stern (professionally painted at Channel Islands Boatyard). In December 2007, the hull and decks were painted by the owner in his shop to touch up areas that had been worn due to normal wear and tear.

Equipment/Engine Details: The boat and trailer package includes 2007 model P30-2H aluminum triple-axle All American Trailer Manufacturers trailer with GVWR of 15,240 lbs. The trailer is equipped with all stainless steel hardware, Demco DA 10 actuator hitch, hand-crank bow winch, hand-crank trailer stand, safety chains to truck, two carpeted bunks, two carpeted low profile boat guides, Kodiak stainless steel disc brakes, step-on diamond plate fenders, spare tire mount, spare wheel/tire, and lights. The trailer weighs 1,540 lbs. Combined towing weight of boat and trailer is 13,540 lbs. (We’re using net tonnage for weight of boat, which might not be accurate).

Engine Details: The power package includes two 4.2 liter turbo MerCruiser 220 HP diesel I/O engines. Port engine has 400 hours, and starboard engine has 3,000 hours. With the current power-prop setup, the boat cruises at 18 knots and reaches maximum speed of 20 knots. With different props, the boat will do 27 knots. Other engine features include MerCruiser Bravo II outdrives, wet outdrive exit exhaust, freshwater cooling system, two stainless steel power props, one spare prop, set of two aluminum speed props, two hydraulic stainless steel double ram trim tabs, two 200-gallon aluminum saddle fuel tanks, two flush deck fuel fills with screw caps, neoprene fuel lines, and hydraulic steering. The engines and outdrives are well maintained. Recent service includes full service on engines and complete rebuild on outdrives. Service and rebuild completed by professional mechanic. As of January 2009, the like-new outdrives have zero hours.

One of the safety features of the Radon design is the sealed engine compartment that houses the stern-drive power package. Other engine compartment features include large engine hatch with gel-coat and non-skid surface, stainless steel motor mounts, electric exhaust blower, four stainless steel air vents, stainless steel handle, and shelving for batteries.

Remarks: SPIRIT I has had a long successful background in Northern and Southern California urchin diving fisheries. More recently, the boat has been successful in the rock crab, lobster, black gill long line, sable fish, and slime eel fisheries. She has been working off the coast of Channel Islands Harbor. The boat has proven to be worthy for its long range capability and big fishhold space.
