Long-range fisherman!

The Radon Boats history began back in the early 1960s when avid sportsman and construction worker Ron Radon Sr. moved his family from their native Washington State to Santa Barbara California. After learning to scuba dive, Ron Radon was convinced by his buddies to try commercial abalone diving. Ron started diving the local Santa Barbara waters in a 16' sport fishing boat and soon found he could make a good living doing so. Soon Ron purchased a 20' fiberglass production hull and modified it to better suit commercial use. After the first season, Ron realized the shortcomings of his boat and decided to design something better.

Ron's empirical knowledge gained from working in the notoriously rough waters of the Channel Islands led to a design that was a vast improvement over the typical boats used at the time. At the end of the second season Ron sold his boat and, together with his sons Don, Mike, and Ron Jr., began production on a new 24' boat. Using all the best features of the first boat, and the additional knowledge gained from testing done over the last season, the new 24' Radon became the envy of many commercial divers in the area. Ron and his sons were able to work in almost any sea condition, covering more territory more quickly than most of the other boats in the fleet.

This 24 x 8 Custom is an excellent ocean boat and appropriate for a variety of sport and commercial applications. The boat package includes diesel power, trailer, cuddy cabin, enclosed pilothouse, plenty of working deck, and big fish hold. So... let's go fishing!

Accommodations: Overnight accommodations are provided for two passengers in two single berths. Two separate cabin areas include forward cuddy cabin and enclosed pilothouse. The forward cuddy cabin layout includes two side-by-side single berths or one large berth (with inserts). Other cuddy cabin features include under-berth stowage compartments, and access to helm wiring. The enclosed pilothouse layout includes full instrumentation helm, captain's seat, and first mate's seat. Other pilothouse features include 6' headroom, forward access to cuddy cabin, under-seat stowage areas, helm sole stowage compartment, two side sliding windows, three front windows, two vinyl seat cushions, stainless steel grab rail, 12-volt lighting, accessory panel, and lockable companionway door.

Galley Equipment: None.

Electronic and Navigational Gear: The helm station is equipped with MerCruiser sport steering wheel, key start ignition, forward/reverse throttle, gauges, and electronics. Electronic and navigational gear includes Furuno 24-mile radar with closed array, Uniden GPS/Plotter/fathometer, VHF marine radio, and Ritchie compass.

Electrical/Gas/Plumbing: Two marine batteries power the 12-volt electrical system. Other electrical features include alternator charging system, battery isolator switch, accessory panel, two 12-volt deck lights, and running lights.

Water system includes wash down pump, Rule 2000 12-volt automatic bilge pump, and fish hold pump.

Hull and Deck Gear: The hull design is modified vee, suitable for West Coast sea conditions, and enables the boat to stay on a plane and maintain a high speed in both forward sea and following sea conditions. This is the notable design of choice among commercial fisherman from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. The hull is built of hand-laid fiberglass, and the decks are fiberglass with non-skid surfacing. Deck layout includes deck at bow, foredeck, narrow walk-around side decks, large working cockpit, and raised aft deck over engine compartment. Hull and deck gear includes stainless steel bow eye, two foredeck stainless steel grab bars, heavy duty aluminum cockpit side rails, two cabin top grab rails, raised gunwales, washdown decks, two scuppers, hydraulic controls, davit mount, stainless steel outdrive guard at transom, and boat hoisting cleats. Anchor gear includes one Bruce 20-pound anchor with 5/16" galvanized chain and 1/2" rode. Other anchor gear features include stainless steel bow roller, stainless steel anchor mount, commercial-grade hydraulic windlass, and chain spooler. Safety gear includes four PFD's, fire extinguisher, 24" ring buoy with safety line, flare kit, docking line, and fenders. Fishing and sports gear include two stainless steel swim steps (port and starboard), two rail mounted stainless steel (gold) rod holders, bait tank, and in-deck fish hold with fiberglass hatch and pump. The versatile fish hold can be used as dry storage for divers, fish hold for fishermen, or hot tub for surfers.

Equipment/Engine Details: Trailer package includes 1983 Roadrunner double-axle painted steel trailer. Trailer features include safety chain, trailer stand with hand crank winch, hand crank boat pulley, lights, four carpeted bunks, carpeted boat guides, and boarding ladder. The trailer weighs 650 lbs. Combined towing weight of boat and trailer is approximately 6,450 lbs.

Engine Details: Power package includes 2000 220 HP six-cylinder turbo MerCruiser (SNOL844137) diesel I/O engine with 700 hours. The boat cruises at 18 knots and reaches maximum speed of 25 knots. Other engine features include 125-gallon aluminum fuel tank, fresh water cooling, MerCruiser DSLR outdrive, MerCruiser Bravo Two reduction gear, Racor water separator, and three-blade aluminum prop.

One of the safety features of Radon boats includes the sealed engine compartment. The engine compartment has starboard shelf for batteries, port shelf for tools and accessories, four stainless steel vents, and aluminum two-sided (butterfly) hatch.

Remarks: In the early years, CRUISER was a successful scout boat used for finding fish off the coast of Monterey. More recently, CRUISER has been a recreational boat used for fishing, diving, and hunting (boar and deer) off the Channel Islands.

If you are an avid sportsman, you will appreciate the long-range performance of this boat. We have put together some photos on our website of the crew aboard CRUISER landing albacore at the inner banks (182). The owner has promised to send us more photos of the boat landing fish at outer banks... Mushroom and West Butterfly. At these destinations, you will encounter albacore, Mahi-Mahi, pilot whales, crashing yellow fin, blue fin, marlin, shark, and seiners. The sea life way out there is incredible! These trips require a boat to travel several hundred miles and run for more than 24-40 hours consecutively without refueling. San Clemente Island is easy, but imagine running from LA Harbor to Mexico like the big boys! This is serious range for a private fishing boat... and this is what CRUISER is all about!
